broadband

BIT.net leverages the power of Tier 1 and Tier 2 networks around the nation to provision high quality broadband ADSL services. Here's a quick guide to our residential and business broadband services and the packages on offer.

First up is a listing of our plans with all the pertinent information for those that already know how ADSL works. For more information, please see the descriptions after the plan tables, and if that still doesn't help, feel free to contact us directly.

adsl number checker

Not everyone can get ADSL. Availability of broadband depends on a number of things - whether or not your telephone exchange has been enabled for ADSL, the quality of your phone line, the distance from you to the telephone exchange and whether or not there are 'ports' available at your exchange.

Using this number checker can give you an idea of whether your phone line is capable of ADSL broadband. Note, however, that success in this checker is only based on whether your exchange is enabled and whether there are ports available. It does not indicate ADSL availability on your particular line.

The only way to know for sure whether you can or can't get ADSL is to actually submit an order at which point a complete prequalification check will be performed on your line.

  1. This is the plan's theoretical maximum download (the number before the '/') and upload (the number after the '/') speed, measured in kilobits per second. While you should receive this speed most (if not all) of the time, BIT.net makes no assertions that you will achieve this speed at all times. upto 8000/384 menas that this plan will auto train at differing speeds based on many factors including distance from exchange and line quality etc. Residential services are provided on a "best effort delivery" basis, and don't come with an Service Level Agreement (SLA). See tips and terms below.
  2. This is the plan's monthly quota measured in Megabytes. For charging purposes, BIT.net considers 1 Megabyte to be made from 1000 Kilobytes. See tips and terms below.
  3. This is the plan's monthly price, and is only an indication of the charge for ongoing provision of the ADSL service. It does not include installation/termination/modification and/or hardware fees, any fees charged through late payment of account, any add-on options provided nor excess usage fees should the plan include them.
  4. This is a price per unit of usage (generally cents per megabyte) dictating how a plan is charged once you reach and exceed the monthly data quota. Not all plans have excess usage prices, and the ones that do generally have a price cap (afterwhich normal shaping applies) to limit the maximum amount that you can pay.
  5. This is the maximum price you can pay on plans that have excess usage prices. Essentially once you use the monthly data quota, data is charged at the excess usage price until this price cap, afterwhich normal shaping occurs. Not all plans have price caps, generally the ones with excess usage charges (this is stop you from getting a massive bill).
  6. This is the data limit at which your connection will be shaped, that is, your download speed lowered to 64Kbps for the remainder of your billing month. Once your quota rolls over you will be unshaped back to full speed.
  7. Bundled option must be bundled with BIT.net Full service phone, Line rental applies.

small business

BIT.net's small business plans are unmetered, meaning your business will never get hit with either excess usage charges or slow speeds due to shaping. Small business plans are subject to a couple of conditions:

  • an ABN is absolutely required for signing up
  • preferred method of payment is direct debit via either a credit card or a bank account, but BPay can be selected however we do ask for 3 months of service fees up front.

small business plans

fees

There are a few charges that you need to be aware of - setting up, modifying and pulling down a broadband service incurs costs from our wholesale provider that we pass on to you. The one fee you cannot get around paying is your installation fee which is different depending on whether you are setting up a new ADSL connection or 'churning' one across from another provider. All other fees are avoidable if you stay for longer than six months and don't change the parameters of your service.

Also, we list some broadband hardware items for your connection that we can supply to you if you would like - you're not required to purchase ADSL hardware from us, however it may be easier for you and certainly these are the devices that the support team are most familiar with.

broadband fees

new connection fee

This is a once-off charge to connect your broadband service and applies to all services connected "from scratch". This fee pays for our Service Partner to configure your line for broadband access, and incurs a minimum commitment term before which disconnecting will attract a termination fee. The cost of the new connection fee depends on the selected commitment term (please see the table below). This fee is mutually exclusive with the fast transfer connection fee below ie. you will only need to pay one of these two fees depending on your connection type.

commitment period price
0 months $165.00
6 months $132.00
12 months $99.00
24 months $0.00

fast transfer connection fee

This is a once-off charge to connect your broadband service and applies to all services transferred to us from participating broadband providers (that is, providers that participate in the 'fast transfer' or 'churn' process). This fee pays for our Service Partner to reconfigure your line for broadband access with us, and incurs a minimum commitment term before which disconnecting will attract a termination fee. The cost of the fast transfer connection fee depends on the selected commitment term (please see the table below). This fee is mutually exclusive with the new connection fee above ie. you will only need to pay one of these two fees depending on your connection type.

commitment period price
0 months $110.00
6 months $50.00
12 months $0.00

termination fee

This is a once-off charge should you wish to disconnect your broadband service prior to finishing the minimum commitment term for your connection. Naturally, this charge doesn't apply if you've stayed connected longer than the commitment term for your connection (selected when you signed up). The cost of termination depends on your minimum connection term, listed in the following table.

commitment period price
0 months $0.00
6 months $132.00
12 months $199.00
24 months $249.00

speed modification fee

This is a once-off charge to modify the speed of your broadband service and pays for our Service Partner to reconfigure the speed of your line. The normal fee is $50.00 for a speed change up or down, however we are prepared to wave this fee if you would prefer to extend your commitment period with us by 6 months ie. if you signed up with a 6 month commitment period and changed speed in month 3, you would then be in the 3rd month of a 12 month commitment period.

plan change fee

This is no charge to change your current plan within the same speed, ie from a lower quota 512k plan to a higher quota 512k plan. Note that you cannot change your plan more than once in a two month period.

add-on options

BIT.net provides a number of add-ons and value-adds to make your broadband service more useful and valuable than ever before. Listed below are all the options available on our residential and small business ADSL plans, along with their respective prices.

These options can be selected during the signup process, however if you already have a broadband service with us, please contact us to have any of them added to your account.

A number of terms have been used to describe the different fees for options, here is a quick definition of each:

once-off setup fee: A once-off setup fee, ie you are only required to pay this fee once to have the add-on configured.
monthly fee: The monthly cost of this add-on on top of your normal service bill.
modification fee: This is the cost of modifying the configuration of the addon.

Note that not all options have all the different fees defined. For example backup dialup does not have any type of modification possible and thus does not have a modification fee.

backup dialup

once-off setup fee: $0.00
monthly fee: $5.50

In the unlikely event that your ADSL connection should be unusable through either fault or during maintainence, make sure that you will always be online by adding a backup dialup service to your ADSL plan. This is a normal 56k modem dialup connection (which means you will need your own modem), and will only work while your ADSL is not connected (it uses the same username as your ADSL service).

static ip and reverse dns

once-off setup fee: $22.00
monthly fee: $4.40
modification fee: $11.00

It's sometimes convenient to have a "static" IP address (one that does not change) for your ADSL connection. This could be because membership to a website requires it, or because you're an avid IRC (Internet Relay Chat) user. For those reasons and more, BIT.net can provide you with a static address. Also, once you have a static address, it is possible to personalise your "Reverse DNS" name (the name others see when they resolve your IP address).

8 ip routed block

once-off setup fee: $22.00
monthly fee: $11.00

If you run several public network servers on your ADSL connection, it is convenient to address those server machines individually. BIT.net can provide you with a block of 8 publically routed IP addresses. This will allow you to assign 5 servers with separate IP's, as well as a separate IP address for your ADSL modem or gateway server.

16 ip routed block

once-off setup fee: $22.00
monthly fee: $22.00

If you run many public network servers on your network, and need more than 6 usable IP addresses, BIT.net can provide you with a block of 16 publically routed IP addresses. This will allow you to assign a miximum of 14 distinct IP's to your servers, as well as a separate IP address for your gateway server.

If you run many public network servers on your network, and need more than 6 usable IP addresses, BIT.net can provide you with a block of 16 publically routed IP addresses. This will allow you to assign a miximum of 14 distinct IP's to your servers, as well as a separate IP address for your gateway server.

Routing ranges of IP addresses of this size is subject to approval by Network Management (and/or APNIC), in consideration of the BIT.net Terms of Service.

ip virtual private network

once-off setup fee: $22.00
monthly fee: $22.00

Should you wish to collaborate securely with colleagues, or to telecommute from home, we offer Virtual Private Network solutions to meet your needs. For each site that needs to connect to your VPN, we will create a "VPN Endpoint". All traffic flowing over your VPN is unmetered, and totally free of charge.

corporate

Designed especially for the corporate business user in mind, BIT.net offers a full range of SHDSL services built on the residential concept but adding built-in business-friendly options such as a block of 8 (6 usable) IP addresses, complementary backup dialup should the broadband link fail, free email storage and forwarding, free domain hosting for an already registered domain, custom DNS options, packaged e-mail and web hosting, and a commitment to provide you with stable and trouble-free connection 100% of the time.

These plans are developed and sold on a per-application basis, so please contact us for more information and application enquiries.

tips and terms

At BIT.net we like to be up front about our policies as well as the terms and conditions of our service. Here are just a few points which should help clear up some of your confusion. Once again, if you have any more questions please contact us!

  1. For charging purposes, BIT.net considers 1 Megabyte to be made from 1000 Kilobytes. We do this because its a defacto industry standard, and it makes measuring data quite simple.
  2. The speed notations mentioned in the plan tables and descriptions are a measure of the download speed (number on the left) and the upload speed (number on the right). These numbers are theoretical maximum speeds (i.e., we can't guarantee them), and are measured in Kilobits per second. It's worth noting that your web browser sees things in Kilobytes per second - a good rule of thumb is to divide theoretical maximum value of your connection by 10 to arrive at the speed you should expect to see in your web browser.
  3. For a broadband ADSL service to function, it is a business requirement of our carrier that you maintain a telephone service in good accounting and working order. If your telephone service is disconnected for any reason, we may get slugged with a charge to reconnect you, and we'll pass that charge along to you. Two of the most well-known ways of making this happen are: (a) Changing the "leasee" (person named on the bill) of your telephone service, and (b) Not paying your phone bill.
  4. As noted in the section for startup costs, BIT.net broadband services carry a minimum commitment term and are delivered on a month-by-month contract. Sounds like a legal word game, sure, but it's pretty simple: you commit to maintaining your broadband service for a minimum period. If you don't, we charge you a disconnection fee. Each time you're billed for a month, you are contracted to serve (and pay) for that month, which isn't refundable. That's all there is to it. We don't have any clever minimum cost calculators, but the general formula of "hardware costs + installation fee + (monthly fee x commitment period)" is a good indication.
  5. Just quickly, a word of advice from BIT.net for accessing certain interactive services such as online games and streaming media. Choose a 512/128 (or faster!) package, as 256/64 is just a little too sluggish for these sorts of things to run as they were intended. It wouldn't be pretty.

payment options

BIT.net provides a number of payment options all of which have certain conditions and parameters that are specified here. If you have any further questions about our accepted methods of payment please contact us.

automatic direct debit (credit card and bank account)

This method of payment is the easiest way to settle your account. You provide to us a signed authorisation form stating that we can directly debit either a bank account or credit card each month on the due date for the invoice in question (generally 7 days after issue). BIT.net is very careful with your payment details and will not divulge them to any third party. See our privacy policy for more information.

This is our preferred payment method as it is the most reliable and requires little to no manual reconcilliation.

frequently asked questions

what is adsl?

To explain the way ADSL works, it's best to think of your telephone line in terms of a range of frequencies - from things you can hear when you make a phone call, up to things you can't hear (past the range of human hearing). ADSL is simply a way of using those frequencies that don't get used for telephone calls to push really fast internet access down the line from us to your computer. This has some fairly major advantages to the way in which it works - because ADSL doesn't use the same part of the phone line as your telephone does, you can be online and talk on the phone - all at the same time!

Let's take a look at one of the other features of an ADSL service: your ADSL modem (we can supply one to you if you like) forms a "permanent circuit" from your house to your local telephone exchange, which means that ADSL is an "always available" connection - you'll be able to access the Internet at your convenience. And because it's a permanent circuit that doesn't interfere with your telephone calls, you don't need to worry about telephone bills either - ADSL isn't a phone call, so it will never appear on your telephone bill!

Sounds interesting? Then read on. BIT.net have a range of plans created especially for the home user and a full set of plans for the small business and corporate users.

what are adsl line filters?

As explained above in what is adsl? above, ADSL splits your telephone line into two frequency ranges - one for normal voice calls and one for the ADSL data transmission. As these two functions are being performed on reasonably low quality copper wiring within your house it is the norm for the ADSL (because it is a higher frequency range) to 'bleed' into your voice calls and effect the quality of such. Also, normal voice calls can interrupt the ADSL connection so much as to effectively render it offline.

To combat these problems, a simple device known as a 'line filter' is installed between every telephone device (including handsets, fax machines and Foxtel Digital) and the physical phone line. This device effectively filters the frequencies on the line and prevents the voice arena from interfering with the data arena.

Each and every device must have a filter installed between it and the phone line, however the recommended maximum number of such filters is three. Any more than that and they can do more hindering than helping by degrading the quality of your line. If you require more than three line filters, the alternative is not install any filters at all but instead to have an ADSL central splitter installed.

An ADSL central splitter must be installed by a qualified technician (your local electrician should be able to help you) and generally sits at the point where your phone line enters your house before it splits off to the various phone plugs in different rooms. One such plug is marked for your ADSL modem and enjoys a clear line of sight to the phone line as the modem requires, while all the other points in your house will be automatically filtered so as not to interfere. In essence the central splitter is like having a whole bunch of line filters but offers increased line quality with more than three devices.

what is shaping?

The residential series of plans are "shaped" to 64k once you reach the download limit noted in the table - this way you don't need to worry about fees in excess of your monthly charge, for a simpler life.

The starter plans can have limited charges beyond the monthly fee, incremented per mega-byte up to a cap - ie the maximum you can pay for the service per month. Once this price cap is reached, normal shaping takes effect.
