Linksys AG041 Modem Setup GuideThe Linksys AG041 is a fully featured ADSL modem and gateway, with 4 ethernet ports to connect your local computers to. BIT.net supplies this modem as our "4 Port Modem", as we feel that it's an excellent choice for those that need to connect multiple computers for Internet connectivity. If you've purchased this modem from us, it has been delivered pre-configured for your use. If you've purchase this modem elsewhere, read on - here's a guide to setting it up. Like other guides here abouts, anything in italics is something you should see or look for, and anything in bold is something you should click on or do. This guide assumes a few things that you should be aware of. Like many ADSL modem gateways, the Linksys AG041 comes configured with a DHCP server switched on, which will assign each of your computers a network address automatically. You should check that your computer is set up to accept a network address in this fashion - Microsoft Windows calls this process "Assign an IP address automatically", and you can check that you're configured for it in the network setup area: go to the Control Panel, open up the Network Connections control panel and find the entry for your Local Area Connection in the LAN or High-Speed Internet section. Right-click on the Local Area Connection and select properties; in the section called This connection uses the following items:, there will be an entry called Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Select it and click the Properties button. An awful lot of hunting and clicking to find the properties for your connection, but here is where you should double-check that Windows is configured to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically. In Mac OSX, it's a far simpler approach - go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences. The System Preferences window appears - in the icons along the top, click on Network. Unless you've got specific locations set up, check that the Location: is set to Automatic and that Show: is displaying Built-in Ethernet (obviously, you'll only see built-in ethernet in this drop-down list if you have a built-in ethernet adapter, but most modern Macs have one). Click on the TCP/IP tab, and ensure that Configure: is set to Using DHCP. Click the Apply Now button down the bottom of the window and exit out of the System Preferences. In either case, your computer should now be configured to talk nicely with the Linksys AG041.
step 1Open up your favourite web browser - any should work just fine - and go to http://192.168.1.1/. This is the address for the modem, and will open up the web-based administration pages for the modem. If you get a small window open up asking for a username and password, all is well. Enter in the username as admin and the password as admin, click the OK button and you'll be presented with the main page for the modem. If nothing happens when you go to the address noted above, chances are it's one of three things: [1] Something is wrong with your network setup (see above), [2] Your web browser is set to use a proxy server (tell it to not use a proxy server), or [3] Your modem is switched off and/or your computer is not plugged in to the modem via Ethernet. If none of these things appear to be what's causing you troubles, please contact us for further assistance.
step 2There are just a couple things we need to configure: your BIT.net Broadband username and password and the timezone you're in. In the picture on the left, we've given you an example for putting your BIT.net Broadband username and password. Look for the section called PPPoE Settings on the main page if you're not able to find where to type these details in.Leave the Service Name blank, type your full BIT.net Broadband username in to the User Name field (yes, including the @bit.net.au part) and lastly, your password in the Password field. Directly below where you've entered in your username and password, you should configure the modem to keep the connection running at all times - click on the Keep Alive radio button, but leave the redial period at the 30 second default.
step 3Scroll down towards the bottom of the setup page, and you'll find a section called Time Setting. This section is where you configure the time zone the modem is set to use - look for Time Zone and choose an appropriate time zone for yourself, as per the image on the right.Next, click the Save Settings button; you'll be taken to a page with the words Settings are successful.
That's it - your modem is now configured to connect to the BIT.net Broadband network! You can now close the web browser window that you had open to configure the modem. |
